Practicality of conscious effort to activate the kundalini

Till now we have come to understand how dangerous and unstable kundalini yoga is if not practiced systematically as we have discussed in different articles referring Satyananda Saraswati , a leading scholar and teacher of Kriya and Kundalini yoga. It may become very dangerous if not done under proper guidance which is very difficult .There are many prerequisites for Kundalini yoga in a traditional line which are more or less extinct.  Hence kundalini yoga  is not a recommended  process in Kaliyuga. In other article we have come to know that according to tantra kundalini awekening takes place via different processes .

In kaliyuga one needs to attain purification by mantra and Bhakti yoga .  A separate effort for kundalini awakening is not needed . Kundalini awekening takes place by Bhakti yoga also as discussed in other articles.

Let us see what Srila Prabhupada has to say on this.

Guest: What do you think of kundalini-yoga and raja-yoga?

Srila Prabhupada: Raja-yoga means “the king of yogas.” But we are practicing the emperor of yogas, bhakti-yoga, so raja-yoga is included in it. In the Bhagavad-gita [6.47], Lord Krsna says,

yoginam api sarvesam
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah

“Anyone who is always thinking of Me within himself is the topmost yogi.” Therefore a person who is in full Krsna consciousness has surpassed all other kinds of yogic principles.

What is your understanding of kundalini-yoga? Do you know what it is?

Guest: It’s very dangerous.

Srila Prabhupada: Why do you want to practice such a dangerous thing?

Guest: I just wanted to know what you thought of it.

Srila Prabhupada: It is not possible to practice such a difficult process of yoga in this age. It is too difficult. So we recommend that you not waste your valuable time trying to follow something that is not possible for you. That is our recommendation.

Of course, if you want to maintain some “yoga hobby,” that is a different thing. But you will never be successful, because kundalini-yoga is very difficult to perform. In the present age, bhakti-yoga, or Krsna consciousness, is recommended as the only possible way for self-realization. And it is very simple: Just chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Anyone can do it, in any part of the world. One may be of any age; it doesn’t matter whether you’re an old man or a child. The many children of our devotees are chanting Hare Krsna, and old men like me are also chanting Hare Krsna. And these young boys and girls, my disciples, are also chanting Hare Krsna. So it is universal.

My disciples are neither Hindus nor Indians, nor have they any knowledge of Sanskrit. But they have easily picked up this Hare Krsna chant, and they are getting the result. So chanting Hare Krsna is the easiest, most universal method of self-realization in the present age. No other yoga practice will be successful. It will simply be a waste of time.

Analysis: Here Srila Prabhupada is not telling that these processes are bogus or unbonafide . What he is stressing that these are not practical in kaliyuga. Even the sastras says that . Even the bonafide masters and great masters of Kundalini yoga like Sri Satyananda Saraswati acknowledges that indeed kundalini yoga is very difficult and risky and the safest way is Bhakti yoga as mentioned in his books .  Even though it may  take some time and not a jet like ride  but it is the safest .  Sri Satyananda saraswati has also acknowledged that one needs purification and discipline  by Bhakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Pranayama. If not practiced properly then it might lead to complications .

Sri Satyananda Saraswati also mentions about Kundalini yoga “If one fluctuates even slightly, kundalini will return to mooladhara and the real awakening will be more difficult. Therefore, in the first stages of sadhana and awakening, one must have a supreme kind of vairagya (detachment).”

This is the reason Srila Prabhupada mentions conscious effort of Kundalini awakening as  wastage of time and energy.

Regarding kundalini consciousness Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.23.14:

“The aim of this particular system of asana, known as the sitting posture for liberation, or muktasana, is to attain success in kundalini-cakra and gradually raise the life from the muladhara-cakra to the svadhisthana-cakra, then to the manipura-cakra, the anahata-cakra, the visuddha-cakra, and finally to the ajna-cakra. When the yogi reaches the ajna-cakra, between the two eyebrows, he is able to penetrate the brahma-randhra, or the hole in his skull, and go to any planet he desires, up to the spiritual kingdom of Vaikuntha, or Krishnaloka. The conclusion is that one has to come to the brahma-bhuta stage [SB 4.30.20] for going back to Godhead. However, those who are in Krishna consciousness, or who are practicing bhakti-yoga (sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam [SB 7.5.23]), can return to Godhead without even practicing the muktasana process.”

One may ask what is wrong with practicing hatha-yoga?

Hatha-yoga is a bona-fide process of self-realization, but it cannot be practiced as such in the age of Kali. It cannot be practiced in urban settings; it cannot be practiced for just an hour or two a day; and it requires strict celibacy. As a process of improving health and mental well-being, however, it may be practiced in Kali-yuga. The Bhagavatam, which was compiled especially for the age of Kali, says that practicing hatha-yoga can improve one’s physical and mental health: by practicing hatha-yoga, pranayama and so forth one should counteract sufferings due to the body and mind.”

In Kali-yuga, hatha-yoga may be practiced to improve physical and mental health but not for self-realization.
